Why we exist

Black LGBTQI+ people are often faced with homophobia, transphobia, racism, and discrimination from employers lacking and neglecting equity in their company culture.

Black Remote She is a community for Black queer, trans, nonbinary people, and allies interested in working remotely.

Our platform was created to build a safe space for our community to transition into remote work.

White supremacy culture has harmed, burdened, and traumatized us for far too long.

Our community deserves and demands safe spaces.

Our values

  • We are community-driven: Our platform operates as a progressive system of job sharing, a term coined by bell hooks in All About Love, which means we center the well-being of our community in everything we do.

  • We center care in the workplace: We only share opportunities from employers committed to prioritizing the well-being of employees, contractors, facilitators, freelancers, and everyone in-between.

  • We uphold anti-oppressive principles: Our platform requires employers to actively incorporate anti-oppressive principles in their hiring process and work culture. Learn more about our vetting process here.

  • Why our community includes allies: Whether or not you are Black and LGBTQI+, allies are crucial advocates in our community and we need you to actively reinforce inclusivity and equity in the workplace.

What we do

Historically, Black and LGBTQI+ people have feared being our full selves in the workplace, but we are done hiding.

At Black Remote She, our community members have a variety of resources available to support their livelihood, including:

  • A job board with screened employment opportunities to connect job seekers, consultants, and freelancers to safe and flexible work environments.

  • A resource hub with quarterly roundups of funding opportunities, rental assistance, mental health support, and other gender affirming resources.

  • A bi-weekly newsletter from our founder to keep the community empowered, affirmed, and in the loop of upcoming opportunities in our network.

  • A free email course to support job seekers as they navigate and structure their job search.

As a community-driven platform, the voices in our community keep workplaces transparent and accountable for harm inflicted in our communities.

Our ongoing partnership with inside voices captures anonymous BIPOC employee reviews about their current and former employer’s track record with diversity and inclusion. Additionally, our community report submission form is used for continued vetting of organizations that have caused harm in our community.

Our founder’s story

In 2019, Jasmine started Black Remote She as a YouTube channel to act as an educational and awareness tool to help other Black LGBTQI+ folks transition into remote work. 

On the channel, Jasmine shared their personal experiences with workplace discrimination and the flexibility and safe haven remote work offered them, but they vowed not to stop there.

As a self-proclaimed equity enthusiast and radical communicator, Jasmine wanted to create a progressive system of job sharing to harness a safe platform for Black queer, trans, nonbinary people, and allies to access remote work opportunities.

In 2020, Jasmine launched the Black Remote She platform to increase access to remote and flexible job opportunities in workplaces centering inclusivity and equity. 

Using their passion and background in digital organizing and community engagement, Jasmine created Black Remote She as a community-driven platform to keep community at the core of the work.

Jasmine has been featured speaking at national events with various pride centers, Black Innovation Alliance, Out in Tech, PowertoFly, ColorStack, The Future Proof Collective, and more. Black Remote She has been recognized in numerous publications, including Stonewall, Mogul Millennial, Gaye Magazine, and Inclusion Hub.
